Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1880s:
Wooden sawtooth supports for shelves: standard French cabinet making of the late 1800s.
Panelled backboards with chamfered edges: hand-fitted secondary joinery of the period.
Knock-down frame construction: designed for transport in the traditional continental manner.
Cast gilt-brass mounts: hand-finished details with natural darkening in the hollows.
Chevron parquetry side panels: consistent colour mellowing across the grain.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This French Neoclassical open bookcase from 1880 is constructed from satinwood with warm brown chevron veneered side panels and tulip wood crossbanding, standing upon turned feet with brass caps. The upper cornice centres on a gilt bronze mount, matching the ormolu mounts positioned at the top and bottom of the central divider and the upper corners of the frame. The interior comprises two vertical sections, each fitted with five fully adjustable timber shelves against a panelled back. The frame measures 234 cm high, 175 cm wide, and 48 cm deep, designed to flat pack for transport. Suitable for placement in a gentleman's library or study, this piece provides open storage for books and display items while bringing traditional nineteenth-century French cabinet-making into a contemporary home setting.

FAQs

A French satinwood open bookcase is a tall storage piece featuring exposed adjustable shelves without doors, constructed using figured satinwood veneers. These pieces frequently incorporate Neoclassical elements such as gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts and geometric parquetry patterns.

These pieces generally utilise solid hardwood frames veneered with fine woods like satinwood, rosewood, or kingwood. Decorative accents are crafted from chased gilt bronze or brass, with interior shelf supports often incorporating brass saw-tooth ratchet systems.

Authentic nineteenth-century French bookcases exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery, hand-chased bronze mounts secured with original screws, and natural age-related oxidisation on raw timber surfaces. Veneers are laid on solid hardwood grounds using traditional animal glues.

An open bookcase functions well as a focal point in a contemporary study, living room, or hallway. The reflective satinwood grain introduces warmth, while the open shelves offer structure for displaying books alongside ceramic art objects.

Maintain satinwood surfaces by dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage or veneer lifting.
