The Globe-Wernicke company popularised the sectional barrister bookcase in the late 19th century, designed to protect books from dust and allow lawyers to expand their library modularly as their collection grew.

These pieces are typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, featuring modular stacking tiers with upward-lifting glass doors operated by internal equalising metal mechanisms.

Authentic period pieces usually feature makers stamps or paper labels, solid wood backs, dovetail joints on any integrated drawers, and characteristic mechanical patent hinges on each tier.

A barrister bookcase adds architectural interest and vertical storage to a contemporary room, serving as a functional display for books, ceramics, and curiosities in a home office or living space.

Maintain the wood using microcrystalline wax to preserve the polish, avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading, and clean the glass gently with a lint-free cloth without spraying liquid directly onto the wood.
