Description

This is a Georgian, Continental, mouth-blown, polychrome-enamelled glass tumbler dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1750. It has a rough pontil mark on its base.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to the rims of the base commensurate with some 250 years of use.

The glass has a bucket-shaped bowl which is polychrome enamelled with a raptor to one side and flowers to verso. It was perhaps designed with falconry in mind. The dimensions of the glass are - bowl diameter 7.3 cm (2.9 inches); base diameter 5 cm (2 inches); height 9 cm (3.6 inches).  There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is some light rubbing of the enamel at certain points.

Georgian glassware, produced during the reigns of the four King Georges (17141830), is characterised by distinct manufacturing techniques such as lead metal compositions, pontil marks on the base, and often features hand-cut, engraved, or enamelled ornamentation.

These pieces were typically made from potash or lead glass, decorated using opaque glass enamels fired onto the surface at relatively low temperatures, often combined with hand-painted detailing.

Authentic period pieces usually exhibit signs of age such as base wear, tiny air bubbles trapped within the metal, irregular thickness, and a rough or polished pontil scar on the underside.

Antique glassware adds tactile historic interest when displayed on open shelving, within glass-fronted cabinets, or used singly as a small stem vase or decorative object on a mantelpiece.

Antique glass should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding harsh scrubbing or dishwashers, to protect the fragile surface enamels from degradation.
