A cassone is a traditional rich Italian chest or coffer used during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, often commissioned as a dowry chest to hold a brides trousseau.

These chests were typically constructed from native hardwoods such as walnut or poplar, featuring hand-carved panels, mortise and tenon joints, and sometimes elaborate gesso or painted finishes.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct tool marks, hand-wrought iron hardware, natural timber shrinkage, and traditional joinery consistent with seventeenth-century cabinet making techniques.

A large antique chest functions effectively as a focal point in a hallway or living room, offering substantial surface space for displaying decorative objects while providing concealed storage.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels, keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and apply microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish and protect the antique surface.
