Description

French Early 19th Century Giltwood Tapestry Stool, Louis X1V style, 57cm.

A superbly stylish 19th century French, hand carved giltwood stool in the Louis X1V, 18th century style with a 100% wool verdure Belgium tapestry seat and matching cushion.

A handsome tabouret French court stool of elegant form and carved, tapering column supports, unified by an ornate floral basket stretcher with original water gilding. The tapestry upholstery is probably early 20th century.

We believe the stool to be early to mid 19th century, the underside reveals an early frame with evidence of early nails from previous upholstery. The stool sits well and structurally excellent, with no signs of repair, loss or distress.

Please note the cushion has a tear, see images, the cushion is freely detachable from the stool seat, the underside webbing straps may benefit from refixing, these are surface decoration and sold as it is to allow the buyer to decide.

A fine quality French antique stool of charming character and a timeworn patination. A useable antique stool with considerable decorative appeal, an interior design piece that can enhance a classic or contemporary space.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Louis XIV style, also known as French Baroque, is characterised by heavy ornamentation, symmetry, classical motifs, and a sense of royal grandeur using rich materials like giltwood and elaborate textiles.

Traditional pieces typically feature solid timbers such as beech or oak, heavily carved and then coated in gold leaf or gesso, and upholstered with hand-woven wool or silk tapestries secured with brass clout nails.

Authentic items show age-appropriate wear to the gesso and gold leaf layers, hand-cut joinery, traditional hand-forged fixings, and natural fibre webbing or stuffing beneath the upholstery.

This piece works effectively as an accent seating option in a living room, positioned near a fireplace or used as a textural contrast against minimalist, modern furnishings.

Giltwood should be dusted gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding any liquid cleaners, moisture, or chemical solvents that could damage the delicate gold leaf finish.
