It was listed by Opus Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

This is a very nice quality Georgian mahogany candle stand with a lead weighted base.

A candle stick would be placed on the top of the stand. The stand can be adjusted in height with the small side handle which when loosened allows a central wood stick to be pulled up from inside the base. Similar ones illustrated in Pinto.

The thumb screw tightens nicely onto the internal stem to hold in place whether in the extended position or the closed position.

The circular base is lead weighted a good sign of quality, this would make the stand more stable.

Beautifully turned central stem with a side handle.

It measures 21cm h not adjusted x  15cm w at the top.

The Georgian style spans the reigns of the first four Georges, characterised by classical proportions, symmetry, and the introduction of refined timbers like mahogany as trade routes expanded.

Craftsmen typically utilised dense tropical hardwoods such as mahogany or indigenous timbers like oak, often featuring hand-turned shafts, pegged joints, and heavy weighted bases for stability.

Authenticity is assessed by examining tool marks, timber patina, shrinkage cracks, old wax accumulations, and traditional joinery methods consistent with eighteenth-century hand craftsmanship.

Pair the warm timber tones with minimalist modern surfaces, placing it on a mantelpiece or side table to add historical contrast, texture, and organic warmth to the scheme.

Maintain the finish by keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight, applying microcrystalline wax sparingly, and dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth.
