Description

This is a scarce Victorian glass Lady's Companion or She-wee which was used by ladies when travelling and who were caught short and needed to urinate. It was also probably a more desirable vessel to use than the facilities provided by many inns of the day and less expensive than a bourdaloue.

The She-wee is in excellent condition for its age. It shows the light age related wear and tear consistent with some 100+ years of use. It has a rough pontil mark to the base.

The She-wee consists of a flattened spherical reservoir and an oval shaped projection with a turned over rim; the device designed to cause minimum discomfort when used under voluminous skirts. It measures 13 cm (5.2 inches) in width by 18 cm (7.2 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. It has been cleaned thoroughly.

It weighs in at 385 g. (~ 14 oz.). A rare survivor.

Victorian medical glass encompasses a wide range of hand-blown and moulded vessels produced for clinical, domestic, and personal healthcare during the 19th century, reflecting advancements in sanitation and home medicine.

These pieces were typically crafted using traditional glassblowing techniques, often featuring soda-lime or lead glass with characteristic pontil marks, bubbles, and minor imperfections inherent to period manufacturing.

Authenticity is determined by examining the glass composition for period-typical impurities, surface wear, patination, tool marks, and pontil scars left from the hand-blown manufacturing process.

In contemporary interiors, such items are often displayed within cabinets of curiosity, on bookshelves, or as sculptural objects to add a layer of historical intrigue and academic aesthetic.

Antique glass should be handled with clean hands or gloves, washed gently with lukewarm water and mild soap when necessary, and kept away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations.
