This antique Turkmen Ersari Kizil Ayak chuval face dates from circa 1900. It is a wool textile featuring nine geometric gul motifs set against a terracotta red ground, complemented by geometric borders and fringe edging at both ends. The design incorporates repeating latch-hook patterns, a madder red tone, and dark blue and white details within the central medallions. The piece has a low pile with slight even wear, and measures 148 cm high by 85 cm wide and 1 cm deep. Nomads originally used these storage bag faces inside yurts or on camel backs to transport goods. Today, this rectangular textile functions well as a small floor rug in a gentleman's library, hallway, or study. It is suitable for normal domestic use while adding traditional nomadic character and warm red colour tones to an interior scheme.

A chuval face is the decorated front panel of a large storage bag traditionally woven by nomadic Turkmen tribes for transport and interior tent storage.

These textiles are constructed with hand-spun wool pile tied onto a wool warp and weft structure, dyed using natural plant and mineral dyes.

Authentic period examples display hand-knotted asymmetrical construction, natural dye color variations, soft handle, and specific tribal gul motifs unique to sub-tribes like the Ersari.

These woven panels can be mounted on a wall as decorative textile art, displayed draped over a bench, or used as an accent floor rug.

Vacuum gently using suction only without a rotating brush, keep away from direct sunlight, and rely on specialist textile restorers for deep cleaning.
