A Mafrash is a small woven chest or storage bag traditionally crafted by nomadic Central Asian tribes, particularly the Yomud Turkmen. The decorative front panel, or bag face, features geometric tribal emblems known as guls and was used to store household belongings during migrations.

Yomud textiles are hand-knotted using locally sourced wool for both the warp, weft, and pile. They traditionally incorporate natural plant and mineral dyes to create deep terracotta reds, dark aubergines, ivory, and indigo tones.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-spun wool, slight hand-weaving irregularities, asymmetric knots, and a distinctive colour palette dominated by rich reddish-brown hues. Traditional Yomud guls feature crisp geometric lines and specific tribal crest patterns unique to the sub-tribes.

Small tribal panels like a Mafrash work exceptionally well mounted as framed textile art, draped over a side table, or placed on a small floor space in an entry hall to add historical warmth and texture to modern or bohemian rooms.
