Art Nouveau glass emerged in the late 19th century, roughly spanning from the 1880s to the outbreak of the First World War. It is characterised by organic forms, fluid lines, and innovative chemical treatments to create iridescent effects inspired by nature.

Loetz and other prominent Bohemian glassmakers utilised lead glass combined with metallic oxides applied while hot to the surface. This created a signature iridescent sheen, often referred to as Phanomen glass, requiring immense skill from master glassblowers.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-finished pontil marks on the base, specific weight distribution, and characteristic surface iridescence caused by metallic vapours. Many genuine works also bear acid-etched signatures or factory numbers near the base.

Position the vessel on a reflective surface such as a mahogany sideboard or marble mantelpiece to catch natural light and accentuate its iridescent qualities. Pairing it with minimalist surrounding decor allows the intricate organic form and colour to stand out as a focal point.

Clean antique glass gently using lukewarm water and a mild, non-abrasive detergent, avoiding harsh chemicals or submersing pieces with painted enamel details. Always dry with a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth and keep out of direct, prolonged sunlight to prevent colour fading.
