FAQs

Silver and glass preserve jars became particularly popular during the Victorian and Edwardian periods as dining habits shifted towards elaborate afternoon teas and breakfast spreads, requiring specialised tableware for jams and marmalades.

These pieces typically combine blown or moulded clear glass bodies with hallmarked sterling silver mounts, rims, and lids, often accompanied by a matching silver spoon.

Authenticity is usually confirmed by checking for legible hallmarks stamped on the silver mount, which indicate the makers mark, assay office, purity standard, and date letter.

Such decorative items can be utilised on a sideboard top or dining table centrepiece to add a touch of reflective metallic texture and historical interest to contemporary tablescapes.

The glass can be washed gently in warm soapy water, while the silver mount requires careful cleaning with a specialised non-abrasive silver polish to maintain its lustre without damaging the hallmarks.
