A fine antique dome top early travel trunk with owners initials WF inset with brass studs to the top, a form of early luggage labels. The pine structure box frame retains very good structural integrity, held together by original hand forged iron bound straps and conspicuous iron lock.

Coaching trunks from the early 18th century were specifically designed to withstand the rigorous demands of horse-drawn travel and stagecoach journeys, protecting personal belongings from weather and rough handling.

These trunks were typically constructed with a sturdy wooden core, covered in animal hide or leather such as deer skin, and reinforced with hand-beaten iron straps, bands, and brass or iron studs.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct construction methods, including hand-forged ironwork, hand-cut joinery, natural hide patination, and handmade wrought iron locks rather than modern machine-made fasteners.

An antique trunk can be utilised as a functional coffee table, placed at the foot of a bed for extra blanket storage, or styled atop a console table to add historic texture and tactile contrast to a contemporary living space.

Preservation involves keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity, gently dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoiding harsh modern chemical cleaners to maintain the natural integrity of the historic hide.
