Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

FAQs

Silver filigree work involves delicate twisting and soldering of fine silver threads into intricate patterns, which gained prominence in European metalwork during the 17th century for luxury dining accessories.

Such sets typically combined sterling silver or low-purity silver wire for the handles, steel for the blade and tines, and genuine sharkskin or rayskin (shagreen) for the protective travel cases.

Authenticity is determined by examining hand-tooled silver wire construction, natural patination and wear on the steel blades, and the characteristic pebbled texture of genuine dried rayskin on the housing.

These pieces are best displayed inside a glass-topped table cabinet, mounted within a shadow box frame, or curated on a dedicated collector shelf to highlight their fine craftsmanship.

Keep items away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent the degradation of organic shagreen, and store silver in microclimate-controlled environments to minimise tarnish and oxidisation.
