FAQs

These cabinets trace their origins to the late 19th and early 20th centuries in France, heavily influenced by classical French furniture design traditions such as Louis XV and Louis XVI revivals, where marble tops were utilised for their hygienic and heat-resistant properties.

Authentic pieces typically feature solid timber frames such as walnut, oak, or mahogany, often combined with hand-cut dovetail joints, brass or cast-metal hardware, and inset marble slabs secured to the top surface.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction hallmarks such as hand-carved detailing, timber shrinkage, period-appropriate joinery techniques, and natural ageing or patination on the wood and marble surfaces.

They provide practical bedside storage and surface area while adding historical texture and contrast when paired with contemporary upholstered beds, minimalist lighting, and neutral colour palettes.

Preservation involves dusting timber regularly with a dry cloth, applying microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the wood, and using coasters or sealants on marble tops to prevent staining from moisture and acidic substances.
