Silver gilt, also known as vermeil, involves coating sterling silver with a thin layer of gold. Bon bon or sweetmeat dishes gained popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for serving small confections, nuts, or mints during formal dining and entertaining.

These items are traditionally crafted from sterling silver and subsequently fire-gilded or electroplated with gold. Manufacturing techniques often incorporate piercing, casting for the feet, and delicate edge chasing or repousse work.

Authenticity is verified through hallmarks stamped into the metal, which typically include a makers mark, a standard mark indicating silver purity (such as the lion passant for British sterling), a town mark for the assay office, and a date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture.

These reflective pieces can be displayed on a sideboard, coffee table, or mantelpiece to add a metallic accent. They function well both as standalone decorative objects or as functional vessels for holding small trinkets.

Silver gilt requires gentle maintenance to preserve the delicate gold layer. Cleaning should be done sparingly using a soft, lint-free cloth and mild, non-abrasive soap, avoiding standard silver dips or aggressive polishing agents that can strip the gold plating.
