FAQs

Joint stools originate from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in England, constructed using pegged mortise and tenon joints rather than traditional nailing. They were primarily used as seating at the dining table or as side furniture in domestic households.

These pieces were typically crafted from solid English oak, utilizing pegged joinery, turned legs, and stretchers for structural stability. The construction relies heavily on hand-tooling, adzing on the top boards, and wooden trammels.

Authenticity is determined by examining tool marks, timber shrinkage, peg construction, historical wear patterns, and the colour and patina accumulated over centuries of oxidation and use.

An antique joint stool functions effectively as a side table, a plant stand, or minimalist accent seating in contemporary spaces, providing textural contrast against clean modern lines.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, and treating the timber periodically with traditional beeswax rather than modern chemical polishes.
