Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A joint stool, historically spelt joyned stool, was a primary form of seating in sixteenth and seventeenth-century English households prior to the widespread adoption of chairs. Crafted by joiners using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs, these sturdy square or rectangular seats were used at dining tables and around the hearth.

Traditional joint stools were primarily constructed from native English oak using hand-planed timber. The construction relies on mortise and tenon joints held together with wooden dowel pegs, supported by low perimeter stretchers for structural stability.

Authentic period joint stools exhibit hand-hewn tool marks, subtle irregularities in symmetry, and shrinkage splits along the wood grain. Furthermore, examine the peg ends, which often protrude slightly or feel uneven due to natural timber movement over centuries.

An antique joint stool functions effectively as a characterful side table beside an armchair, an occasional plant stand, or a nightstand in a bedroom. Placing a low oak stool in a hallway or fireplace alcove adds historic texture and visual weight to contemporary or traditional spaces.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Avoid placing historic oak furniture in close proximity to direct heat sources or extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking and warping.
