Ormolu refers to gilded bronze, a technique where finely ground gold-mercury amalgam is applied to a bronze base. It reached the height of its popularity in France during the 18th century, particularly within Rococo and Neoclassical designs.

These items were typically produced via sand casting or lost-wax casting in multiple sections, which were then assembled, chased by hand to refine surface details, and finally fire-gilded to achieve a durable metallic finish.

Authentication relies on examining the weight, chasing quality, and the presence of mercury gilding characteristics under magnification. Period pieces often exhibit tool marks from hand-chasing and natural wear patterns revealing the bronze base underneath.

These pieces function well as focal points on surfaces such as sideboards or mantels, adding metallic texture and historical contrast to modern minimalist or transitional rooms.

Maintenance requires dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Chemical polishes, abrasive cleaners, and water must be strictly avoided to prevent stripping the historic gilt layer.
