Silver bottle tickets, also known as decanter labels, emerged in Britain during the mid-18th century to identify decanted wines and spirits on the dining table. They evolved from simple parchment tags into elaborate silver items reflecting Georgian craftsmanship and the rising popularity of port, sherry, and Madeira.

These items were predominantly crafted from sterling silver, often shaped using piercing, stamping, or engraving techniques. Many featured hand-engraved lettering, cast heraldic motifs, or delicate reeded borders executed by silversmiths specialising in smallwares.

Authenticity is typically verified by examining hallmark stamps, including the makers mark, assay office mark, and date letter, though very small pieces from the early Georgian period sometimes only bear a makers mark. The weight of the silver, quality of the hand-engraving, and natural patina also serve as key indicators of age.

These small collectables can be displayed on vintage decanters upon a bar cart, framed as a miniature collection in a study, or styled within a glass-fronted cabinet to add historical detail to a room.

Preservation requires minimal cleaning using a soft microfibre cloth to remove dust, avoiding harsh abrasive dips that strip the aged patina. When handling, cotton gloves can prevent oils from the skin from accelerating tarnishing on the sterling silver surface.
