This large Victorian breakfront library bookcase dates from the mid 19th century and is made of mahogany with a warm patina, incorporating flame mahogany veneers on the lower central panels and transparent glass in the upper doors. The breakfront profile has a stepped moulded cornice running along the top, above four upper glazed doors and two lower solid cupboard doors flanked by two further glazed doors, all resting on an integrated moulded plinth base. The interior holds adjustable shelves filled with rows of books in various bindings of red, green, black and tan. Keyholes are fitted to the doors and the timber displays subtle variations in grain tone across the facade. Measuring 253 cm high by 234 cm wide and 42 cm deep, this substantial architectural shelving unit requires significant wall space. In a modern residence, it provides extensive vertical storage and display capacity for a home study, executive office, or formal drawing room to house a comprehensive book collection.

A breakfront bookcase features a central section that juts forward beyond the flanking side cabinets, providing a layered architectural silhouette. Predominantly constructed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these large units typically incorporate glazed upper sections for book storage and solid lower doors.

These cabinets were primarily constructed using solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneers over secondary timbers such as pine or oak. Glazed sections featured individual glass panes held in place with wood glazing bars or framed timber doors.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawer linings, hand-planed secondary backing boards, and slight variations in original glass panes. The patina of the mahogany timber displays natural tonal variation and oxidisation consistent with age.

A substantial mahogany bookcase serves as an architectural anchor in a study, dining room, or wide hallway. Designers contrast the dark wood tones against neutral or contemporary wall finishes to highlight the geometric lines of the cabinet.

Regular dusting with a dry microfibre cloth prevents dust build-up, while occasional applications of high-grade beeswax nourish the wood and preserve its finish. Avoid placing the furniture in direct sunlight or adjacent to heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
