Zanzibar chests, also known as Oman chests, are traditional wooden storage boxes traditionally made from camphorwood or teak and heavily decorated with brass studs, plates, and intricate geometric designs, originating from the trade routes linking Oman, India, and East Africa during the 19th century.

These chests are typically constructed from aromatic camphorwood, chosen for its natural insect-repelling properties, and are joined using traditional dovetail joints. They feature hand-hammered brass plating, decorative studs, and often integrated small drawers and iron locking mechanisms.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as hand-cut dovetail joinery, hand-beaten brasswork secured with individual hand-forged tacks, natural oxidation on the metal, and the distinct aromatic scent of aged camphorwood.

This piece can be styled in a living room as a coffee table or at the foot of a bed, adding textural contrast, warm metallic accents, and functional storage to both traditional and modern schemes.

Preservation involves dusting with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that can damage the wood finish, and occasionally applying natural beeswax to maintain the timbers moisture and lustre without obstructing its natural aroma.
