This antique Caucasian Soumak carpet dates from circa 1900 and is executed in a flatweave wool technique. The composition displays three octagonal central medallions in madder red set against an indigo blue ground, complemented by a soft madder red outer field populated with small tribal filler elements and a geometric star design border on an ivory ground, finished with braided ends. The palette encompasses shades of red, blue, yellow, and ivory. Signs of age include slight overall wear and minor age-related damage to the end finishes. Measuring 370 cm high by 182 cm wide and 1 cm deep, the carpet spans a large rectangular format. In a modern home, it suits normal domestic use on the floor of a gentleman's library or principal reception room, paired with a quality underlay on hard flooring.

Soumak rugs originate from the Caucasus region and are characterised by a specific supplementary-weft flatweaving technique, creating a durable cloth-like structure without a raised pile.

Traditional Soumak carpets are handwoven using natural wool yarns for both the foundation warp and the decorative pattern threads, often utilizing hand-dyed wools coloured with natural dyes.

Authentic antique Caucasian pieces feature flatweave construction with exposed thread ends on the reverse side, distinct geometric motifs such as medallions, and subtle variations in dye colours.

A Caucasian flatweave carpet works as a focal point in a neutral space, pairing well with contemporary furniture, leather upholstery, or traditional timber pieces to add texture and geometric pattern.

Routine care involves gentle vacuuming without a rotating beater bar, prompt spot-cleaning with mild damp cloths, and periodic professional cleaning by specialists experienced in historic textiles.
