123 X 155cm Antique Kuba 'Khyrdagyd' Prayer Rug

19th century
Description

An exceptional example of a rare Caucasian prayer rug dated 1296 or 1874, with the 'Khyrdagyd' design within the field. A number of early indications for this lovely rug apart from the date which seems to be accurate; the squarish format, the floating mihrab- it doesn't touch the inner borders at all and the high quality weave and colours used. It's very attractive and in excellent condition. There are some small repairs but for a rug of this age I think these are absolutely normal and acceptable.

Declaration

This antique Caucasian Kuba rug dates to 1870 and displays the traditional Khyrdagyd prayer design. The wool textile presents a rich navy blue field filled with dense, small geometric motifs and scattered floral blossoms. A stepped mihrab arch sits floating centrally inside multiple decorative geometric borders rendered in tones of red and ivory, complemented by fringed ends. Small repairs appear across the surface, reflecting normal wear appropriate for an antique floor covering of this age with a squarish format. The rug measures 123 cm by 155 cm. Position the piece on a hardwood floor in a study or library to add historical warmth and traditional pattern to the interior scheme.

Kuba prayer rugs originate from the Northeast Caucasus region and are characterised by fine hand-knotted wool construction, dense geometric motifs, and structural features such as a pointed mihrab niche indicative of prayer design.

These rugs were hand-woven using locally sourced hand-spun wool for the warp, weft, and pile, dyed with natural plant and mineral dyes to produce deep indigo, terracotta red, and soft yellow tones.

Authentic examples feature a high knot density, precise geometric patterns including small field motifs known as khyrdagyd, a distinct mihrab arch, and a durable wool foundation.

The rich indigo tones and structured geometric patterns ground contemporary wooden floors, serving as a focal accent in a study, hallway, or living space to introduce depth and texture.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating beater bar, rotate periodically to distribute foot traffic, blot spills immediately with a dry cloth, and utilise specialist professional cleaning when required.
