Gendje Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique rugs in such good condition are rare things, generally better rugs are treated with more care and so the better pieces survive. This is an impressive and very beautiful rug with a central field that shines like a stained glass window. Light fields such as this are also desirable and the hexagonal lattice filled with multi-coloured stars is breath taking. The border shows Talish rosettes and one might be forgiven in making a South Eastern Caucasian attribution but the knot count and palette point to the more likely district of Gendje which was a melting pot of Caucasian designs. The beauty of this rug speaks for itself, one of the best I have owned to date.

Excellent condition with just a little re-piling of the black wool and a small edge repair.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gendje rugs are traditional tribal textiles woven in and around the city of Ganja in the Southern Caucasus. They are characteristically distinguished by their elongated runner format, bold primary colours, and repeating geometric patterns such as stars, diagonal stripes, or diamond lattices.

Authentic Caucasian rugs are typically hand-knotted using sheeps wool for both the pile and the foundation structure. The yarns were traditionally coloured using natural plant and mineral dyes, resulting in rich hues of red, blue, yellow, and ivory.

Authentic Gendje rugs feature hand-bound wool selvedges, a flexible wool foundation, and distinct abrash, which is a subtle variation in dye colour caused by hand-dyed wool batches. The design structure relies on symmetrical geometric motifs rather than floral curvilinear patterns.

A geometric tribal runner is best positioned along long hallways, galley kitchens, or corridors to add warm colour and historical texture. Placing the rug on neutral wooden or stone flooring creates a clear visual contrast that highlights its graphic motifs.

Vacuum the rug regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating beater bar to avoid damaging the hand-knotted fibres. Use a quality rug underlay to prevent slipping, rotate the piece periodically to ensure even wear, and seek professional specialist cleaning for deep maintenance.
