Originating from the Kuba district of the Eastern Caucasus during the last quarter of the nineteenth century, this antique Caucasian kilim flatweave rug is fashioned from fine wool. The piece displays a bold repeating pattern of stepped diamonds, cross medallions, and latch-hook motifs executed in a terracotta red, navy blue, and cream colour palette, framed by serrated borders. Having spent most of its life hung up, the rug is professionally cleaned and survives in exceptional condition. Measuring 318 cm high and 188 cm wide, the large format provides substantial floor coverage. Suitable for placement on the floor of a living room, study, or bedroom, the kilim functions as a decorative textile that enlivens various interior settings with its striking geometric design. The flatweave construction lacks a traditional pile, presenting a smooth surface that sits low to the ground. The edges are bound in dark yarn, and the composition draws on traditional eastern Caucasian weaving techniques characteristic of nineteenth-century regional production. The repeating stylised motifs create a balanced visual rhythm across the central field, while the contrasting border frames the primary composition.

Caucasian kilims are traditional flatweave textiles crafted by tribal weavers in the Caucasus region during the 19th and early 20th centuries. They are defined by their pileless tapestry construction and bold geometric patterns.

Traditional kilims are handwoven using hand-spun wool yarns for both the warp and weft threads. The flatweave design relies on a slit-weave technique where colour changes create vertical openings along motif boundaries.

Authentic pieces feature hand-spun wool variations, subtle natural vegetable dye shifts known as abrash, and traditional geometric motifs such as stepped medallions. The flatweave structure makes the design visible on both sides.

A kilim rug acts as a graphic focal point when layered over wooden flooring or concrete in modern or bohemian schemes. It combines effectively with leather furniture, contemporary silhouettes, and dark wood finishes.

Routine care requires gentle vacuuming using suction only, avoiding beater bars that can disrupt woven threads. Professional cleaning is recommended for stain removal, and a non-slip rug pad should be placed underneath to protect the fibres.
