Antique Armenian Karabagh 'Bee' Kilim with Large Medallion Design, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 12ft 8in x 6ft 9in (386 x 205cm).

Antique Armenian Karabagh region kilim of large medallion design.

Circa 1900.

A good example of a traditional Armenian kilim from the Karabagh region. The kilim is woven in soft pastel colours with a large scale double linked medallion design, on a dark indigo blue ground. The use of soft greens, yellows, blues and light pinks makes this a most attractive furnishing kilim. The traditional Armenian name for this kilim design translates to 'bee design', as the medallions contain stylised bee's gathering nectar from a flower.

The kilim is in excellent condition with very slight wear, I have detected a few very well done small old repairs.

The kilim is suitable for normal domestic use.

Stock Number: DS-1070.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Karabagh kilims originate from the Karabagh region in the Southern Caucasus, a area historically renowned for its rich textile weaving traditions. Produced predominantly by Armenian and Azerbaijani weavers, these flat-woven carpets feature distinctive large geometric medallions, vibrant palettes, and stylized floral or faunal motifs influenced by regional heritage.

Traditional kilims are handwoven using locally sourced, hand-spun wool for both the warp and weft threads. They employ a slit-weave technique, where colour changes create deliberate vertical slits along pattern boundaries, resulting in a flat, pileless textile dyed with natural plant and mineral pigments.

Authentic antique Karabagh kilims can be identified by their flat-weave structure, soft handle, and natural dye variations known as abrash. They typically display prominent central geometric medallions, stylized insect or floral devices such as bee patterns, and multi-banded geometric borders.

A flatweave kilim adds texture and graphic interest when placed over hardwood flooring or layered atop a neutral wool carpet. Its geometric layout grounds living rooms, dining areas, or entrance halls, complementing both modern contemporary and traditional decorative schemes.

Vacuum the rug regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotary beater bar to prevent damage to the weave. Address spills immediately by blotting with a clean, damp cloth, and use a high-quality rug pad underneath to prevent slipping and reduce fibre friction.
