History

Rene Lalique 1880-1945 Rene Lalique was born a rural 19th century man in a pre-industrialized Europe. It was a time before light bulbs, and telephones, before automobiles and washing machines and electricity.

But by the time of his death in 1945 at the dawn of the atomic age, he would have completed two careers spanning two different centuries. In 1900 at the age of 40, he was the most celebrated jeweller in the world and an art nouveau artist and designer of magnificent proportions.

But by 1925 at the height of the art deco era he was the most celebrated glassmaker in the world. In between Lalique would leave his contemporaries behind as he turned from creating unique jewellery and objects d’art, to the mass production of innovative and usable art glass.

He brought glass into the home of everyday people where it had never been before, and he worked out the industrial techniques to mass produce his useful art glass objects on a scale and cost to complement the spreading industrial revolution and resulting worldwide appeal.

This Rene Lalique amber Volubilis bowl dates from the 1920 Art Deco period and is made from pressed glass. The shallow circular form features a warm amber colour with frosted and clear finishes, showing morning glory or volubilis flower motifs across the interior. Three integral floral feet extend underneath, serving as supports for the vessel. The piece measures 6 cm high and 21.5 cm wide in practical terms. In a modern interior, this decorative bowl suits placement on a sideboard top to display its French art glass design. The pressed glass construction reveals distinct petal relief patterns radiating from the centre towards the rim, alongside the signature on the underside. The rounded profile and low footing provide stability for tabletop display while highlighting the floral details of the period.

Designed by Rene Lalique during the 1920s and 1930s, Art Deco Lalique glass features frosted, clear, or amber moulded glass embellished with stylised floral, geometric, or naturalistic motifs.

These vessels were crafted using press-moulding techniques where molten glass was introduced into detailed metal moulds, forming defined relief patterns and integrated footed bases.

Authentic pieces typically feature moulded or wheel-cut signatures such as R. LALIQUE or Lalique France, alongside sharp detail in the relief work and a complete absence of heavy modern mould seams.

Display the vessel on a sideboard, coffee table, or window ledge where natural directional light highlights the translucency and amber coloration of the glass.

Hand wash gently using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive sponges, and extreme hot or cold water to prevent thermal stress.
