Enamelled glass boxes gained prominence during the 19th century, frequently featuring in affluent European households as vanity and dresser accessories for storing jewellery and small keepsakes.

These pieces typically combine mould-blown or pressed coloured glass with cast brass or bronze metal mounts, decorated using hand-applied enamelling and gilding techniques.

Authentication involves examining the wear patterns on the gilding, the weight and construction of the metal mounts, and identifying maker marks or foundry stamps where present.

Positioning the box on a surface such as a dressing table, mantelpiece, or sideboard allows it to function as a decorative focal point while holding small accessories.

Clean the glass and metal surfaces gently with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals to protect the delicate enamel and gilt details.
