FAQs

Barrister bookcases, also known as stacking or lawyer bookcases, were developed in the late 19th century to protect valuable volumes of law books while allowing individual modular units to be easily transported or expanded.

These cabinets were traditionally constructed using quarter-sawn oak to highlight the woods natural grain, fitted with brass-plated hardware and vertically lifting glass doors.

Authentic pieces typically feature makers stamps such as Globe Wernicke, dovetail joints, pegged construction, and mechanisms involving metal scissor linkages to guide the glass doors.

Pair the warm wood tones with minimalist decor or neutral walls to allow the craftsmanship to stand out, while filling the modular shelves with leather-bound volumes or curated objects.

Maintain the wood by applying microcrystalline wax periodically, avoiding direct sunlight to protect the finish, and cleaning the glass with ammonia-free solutions.
