This “Outstanding Quality Walnut and Brass Mounted Bookcase” found a buyer.

It was listed by Tom Scott Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

Outstanding quality and condition English 19th century figured walnut glazed top bookcase on cabinet with all original brass mounts and adjustable shelves, circa 1880.

The colour and grain pattern of the walnut used on this bookcase really are stunningly beautiful, along with the quality of craftsmanship. End grain mouldings to the plinth and mid section, book matched veneers and solid brass mounts giving a crisp contrast with the walnut tone.

The top section has three fully adjustable shelves and are lined with a green brushed velvet. Ideal for shallow depth books of display.

The base section has a single full width fixed shelf.

The bookcase is a shallow depth so it can stand in a number of places and ideally somewhere you will see it everyday and can see the side profiles, without the concern of depth overpowering a living room or hall / landing area for example.

Wonderful piece of antique English Victorian furniture and of the highest quality.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This style typically features rich wood veneers combined with cast brass or ormolu mounts, reflecting classical proportions and refined craftsmanship popular in European cabinet making.

These pieces are constructed using solid timber frames with figured wood veneers, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, and applied brass or gilt bronze hardware.

Authenticity is indicated by period-appropriate construction methods, hand-planed interior surfaces, original glass panes with imperfections, and natural age-related patination on the timber and metal mounts.

Ground the piece in a study or living area by balancing filled book collections with carefully curated decorative objects, allowing the natural wood grain to serve as a focal point.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, applying a high-quality beeswax periodically, and avoiding silicone-based polishes.
