Bristol blue glass gained popularity during the late 18th and 19th centuries, frequently utilised for apothecary, dining, and dressing table wares. Small containers with silver lids were standard accessories on Victorian dressing tables, used to hold cosmetics like rouge, powder, or patches.

These items typically feature mould-blown or pressed cobalt glass combined with hallmarked sterling silver or silver-plated mounts. Gilding and enamelling were often applied by hand to decorate the glass body and metal rims.

Authenticity is determined by examining the silver hallmarks for date letters and makers marks, as well as observing the natural wear, minor surface irregularities, and pontil marks characteristic of period glass manufacturing techniques.

These small decorative objects work well when displayed on a tray on a dressing table, within a glass-fronted cabinet, or styled on a mantelpiece to add a touch of historic colour and texture to a room.

Clean the glass gently with a soft, damp cloth and mild detergent, avoiding harsh chemicals that might damage any gilt detailing. The silver mount can be polished sparingly with a non-abrasive silver cloth, taking care not to let polish residue contact the glass or interior.
