Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian rustic country oak chest and log box brings sturdy utility to living spaces and studies. Built with heavy plank construction, the dark brown wooden exterior reveals a contrasting green painted interior when the hinged lid is lifted open. Simple cut-outs form a shaped base apron beneath the square storage compartment, while visible signs of age include natural grain variations across the timber surfaces. The piece measures 46 cm high, 50 cm wide, and 46 cm deep. Placing this practical container beside a fireplace creates an ideal storage spot for logs and hearth accessories, or it serves as a compact trunk for household items in a hallway or bedroom.

FAQs

Historically, oak coffers served as essential multi-functional furniture items in European households, primarily used for storing valuable textiles, linens, bedding, or personal possessions. Over time, smaller or simpler variants were adapted for practical domestic duties, such as storing firewood or household tools near hearths.

Traditional chests were built using heavy solid oak boards, frequently joined using hand-cut dovetails, mortise and tenon joints, or iron nails. Interiors were sometimes painted or lined to protect stored contents from dampness, splintering, or insects.

Authentic period pieces show signs of genuine wear, such as hand-planed timber surfaces, irregular tool marks, age-related shrinkage of timber planks, and historic hardware like strap hinges or iron locks. The patina of the wood typically shows deep depth of tone in untouched areas.

A rustic oak chest works well positioned beside a fireplace as a log store, placed at the foot of a bed for linens, or utilised as an occasional coffee table in a living room. Combining dark timber with light upholstery or modern plaster walls creates a balanced contrast between historic texture and contemporary space.

Maintain the exterior by applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood moisture and finish. Clean the painted interior using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or wet sponges that might cause historic paint to flake or react.
