FAQs

Bottle coasters emerged in the late 18th century to protect dining tables from condensation rings and spills left by wine bottles, often featuring wheels to facilitate passing them around the table after dinner.

Traditional construction typically combines sterling silver or silver plate for the pierced gallery rims with a turned wood base, frequently featuring a central silver button or boss.

Authenticity is usually verified by examining hallmarks stamped on the silver rim, assessing the patina of the wood base, and checking for period-appropriate construction methods such as pegged or screwed central buttons.

These pieces can be utilized on a dining table or bar cart not only for their original purpose of holding bottles but also as small display trays for candles or botanical elements.

Preservation requires gentle cleaning of the silver with a non-abrasive polish while avoiding excess moisture on the wooden base to prevent warping and cracking.
