Corner cupboards emerged in the early 18th century as a practical solution for utilising unused room corners, evolving from open shelves to enclosed cabinets featuring panelled doors to protect china and glassware.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid oak or pine, often featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, brass butterfly hinges, and fielded panels reflecting period joinery techniques.

Authenticity is determined by examining timber shrinkage, hand-forged or brass hardware, secondary woods used in the interior, and traditional tool marks indicative of period craftsmanship.

Pair the warm tones of the timber with neutral walls and minimalist contemporary furnishings to create a striking focal point that anchors the room.

Maintain the timber by avoiding direct sunlight, keeping it away from heat sources, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the polished finish.
