This unusual tantalus from the Edwardian period holds two cut crystal jugs securely under a locking silver-plated metal lid. The warm brown wooden base has shaped sides, a curved profile, and moulded edges, while the matching wooden uprights support the silver-plated overhead handle bar with its key attached to the side. The two crystal jugs feature deep diamond-cut patterns across their bulbous bodies, curved handles, and faceted glass stoppers. Looking closely at the visible details, the wood displays a polished medium-brown grain, the metal handle has a curved arch shape with a central plate, and small brass screws fix the wooden uprights together. The item occupies a compact footprint measuring approximately 25 cm across, making it well-suited for display on a sideboard top, desk, or drinks cabinet in a gentleman's library or study. It provides a secure way to present and house decanter jugs at home today.

A tantalus is a specialized cabinet or wooden frame constructed to hold spirit decanters securely. Patented in the late nineteenth century by George Betjemann, the design features a locked top bar that prevents the stoppers from being removed without a key while keeping the liquid visible.

Tantalus frames are commonly constructed from hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, often accented with brass, nickel, or silver-plated fittings. The internal decanters are typically fashioned from lead cut glass or crystal with matching hand-cut stoppers.

Authentic nineteenth- and early twentieth-century examples usually feature stamped lock mechanisms, often from makers such as Betjemann or Bramah. Indications of genuine age include natural wear to the base, hand-cut crystal patterns, and period-correct patina on the metal hardware.

A tantalus functions well as a functional decorative object placed on a dining room sideboard, drinks trolley, or home bar surface. Positioned alongside classic glassware, it introduces textural contrast between polished wood, metalwork, and glass.

The wooden frame should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and conditioned using natural beeswax. Crystal decanters ought to be washed by hand in warm water without abrasive chemicals, ensuring complete drying to prevent clouding or water spots.
