Description

This superb and important jug is in perfect condition. It is hand blown in clear glass and has the most exquisite finely detailed hand engraved continuous scene around its body which includes numerous trailing stems with leaves and fruiting berries with two exotic birds perched amongst the fruit. This remarkable jug was bought from a trade contact who had purchased it from a private house and the owner said it had been in long family ownership with an original Thomas Webb connection and it had always been referred to as the William Fritsche jug. The quality of the workmanship would most certainly fit but unfortunately, this jug is not signed.

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

Stourbridge glass refers to glassware produced in the Stourbridge area of Worcestershire and Staffordshire, England, which became a globally renowned centre for fine glassmaking during the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly celebrated for intricate wheel-engraving and cameo techniques.

These pieces were typically crafted from heavy-lead crystal or flint glass, shaped by free-blowing or mould-blowing, and finished with meticulous hand-cut and wheel-engraved ornamentation executed by skilled artisans.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit characteristic weight due to lead content, hand-polished pontil marks on the base, crisp depth and variation in the wheel-engraved motifs, and subtle imperfections typical of period handcrafting.

They can be displayed on open shelving, sideboards, or dining tables as sculptural objects, utilized functionally as water pitchers, or repurposed to hold seasonal botanical stems.

Antique glass should be washed exclusively by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding harsh scrubbing, sudden temperature changes, and dishwasher cycles to protect the delicate engraved surfaces.
