Victorian fish servers, including slices and knives, became prominent during the 19th century as fish courses grew in popularity during formal middle and upper-class Victorian dinners. These specialised utensils were designed specifically to handle delicate fish flesh without breaking it.

These pieces were typically crafted from solid sterling silver, often featuring hand-pierced, engraved, or chased decoration on the blade. Handles were sometimes made of matching silver, mother-of-pearl, or bone, depending on the specific design and maker.

Authentic pieces are identified by examining the stamped hallmarks on the metal, which typically include the makers mark, the standard mark for sterling silver, the town assay office mark, and a date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture.

Antique silver servers can be displayed on a sideboard, within a glazed cabinet, or used functionally during formal dining occasions to add historical texture and reflective metallic accents to a contemporary tablescape.

Preserve antique silver by storing it in tarnish-resistant cloth or bags, and clean it infrequently using a dedicated non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to protect the underlying metal and any fine engraving.
