This 1920 Art Deco cocktail cabinet has a wooden construction finished in black lacquer with curved bowfront doors. The exterior is decorated with hand-painted raised gold and polychrome Chinoiserie landscapes, oriental figures, and a vertical floral panel flanked by silver-toned metal keyhole escutcheons and simple keys. The upper tier consists of two doors opening over a glass-lined interior with a copper gallery, while the lower section opens to a shelved interior equipped with sunken bottle holders and working locks. The top section opens to reveal a large drinks preparation area supported by hinged sides. Visible signs of age include minor surface wear along the edges of the black lacquer finish. Standing 107 cm high, 91.5 cm wide, and 40.5 cm deep, this two-tier storage piece is used to hold glassware and bottles while serving beverages in a reception room or lounge.

During the 1920s and 1930s, the Art Deco movement embraced East Asian aesthetics, leading to a revival of Chinoiserie decoration applied to modern social furniture like cocktail cabinets.

These cabinets typically feature solid wood or veneered frames finished with hand-applied black lacquer or japanning, accented by hand-painted gold decoration and metal escutcheon hardware.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-painted detailing with subtle raised gesso work, natural age craquelure in the varnish layer, era-appropriate locks, and timber construction consistent with early 20th-century techniques.

Position the cabinet as a statement piece in a dining or living space, pairing it with contemporary warm lighting and neutral backdrop tones to highlight the detailed gilded finish.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, keep the item away from direct sunlight or heat sources, and avoid chemical polishes that can degrade historical lacquered layers.
