Originating in the late 18th century during the reign of King George III, linen presses were crafted to store household linens flat before the widespread use of built-in wardrobes, often featuring upper cabinet doors concealing sliding trays and lower drawers.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid mahogany or pine frames, overlaid with premium veneers such as flame mahogany or crotch mahogany, and joined using traditional dovetail joints on the drawers and hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the hand-cut dovetailing, secondary timbers like oak or pine inside the drawers, original brass or ormolu hardware, and the natural oxidisation and shrinkage patterns visible in the timber veneers.

This piece serves as a striking focal point in a contemporary bedroom or hallway, where its rich wood tones can be balanced with neutral wall colours, minimalist lighting, and simple textiles to let the natural grain take centre stage.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, and periodically nourish the surface with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone-based polishes.
