A coffr bach, translating from Welsh as small coffer, is a miniature chest traditionally used in Wales for storing valuables, documents, or as a dowry chest for newly-weds.

These pieces are typically constructed from native English and Welsh oak, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, pegged mortise and tenon joints, and iron or brass hardware.

Authentication relies on examining timber shrinkage, hand-forged or brass escutcheons, tool marks indicative of period hand-planing, and the natural oxidisation and patination of the oak over centuries.

An antique coffer functions well as a practical storage solution in living areas or hallways, providing textural contrast and historic character when paired with contemporary furnishings.

Maintain stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, avoid direct placement near heat sources or sunlight, and periodically nourish the timber with traditional beeswax to preserve the finish.
