FAQs

Victorian furniture spans the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901, characterised by a revival of historicism mixed with industrial manufacturing techniques, leading to diverse stylistic periods from early classical revivals to late aesthetic movements.

Cabinet makers of this era frequently utilised solid secondary timbers like pine or mahogany, veneered with highly figured decorative slices of wood such as burr walnut, and assembled with traditional dovetail joints and brass hardware.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage patterns, natural wax finishes, period-appropriate brass fittings, and construction hallmarks consistent with nineteenth-century workshop practices.

These pieces add warmth and texture when paired with minimalist contemporary furnishings, acting as contrasting focal points that ground neutral colour palettes with rich natural wood grain.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels away from direct sunlight and heat sources, supplemented by occasional gentle cleaning with microfibre cloths and high-quality beeswax.
