Why are so many sold in pairs?

Pairs were made to flank a double bed, one either side, and that is how they have stayed together. Nearly two-thirds of the listings on Sellingantiques are pairs, so the single cupboard is the unusual find here.

What does near pair mean?

It means two pieces that go together but weren't made as one. Dealers also write matched pair, closely matched, harlequin pair or two similar. A true pair or matching pair is the stronger phrase. The qualifier is doing real work in the title.

Which woods turn up most?

Mahogany leads, then walnut, and between them they cover roughly half the listings. Beyond those two the timber names run to kingwood, tulipwood, amboyna, satin birch, sycamore, yew, cherry, elm, fruitwood, birds-eye maple and pollard oak. Pine and oak account for the country end.

Are French bedside cupboards common?

France is named in about a fifth of listings, second only to English pieces. The French group is where marble tops concentrate, often with marquetry inlay and kingwood veneers, and Louis-style listings sit in this branch. Other origins are occasional: Italian, Swedish, Danish Biedermeier, Dutch, Hungarian, Russian, Chinese and Irish examples each appear a handful of times.

How old are these usually?

Dealer-entered dates span 1790 to 1960, and the 1920s and 1930s supply more dated listings than the Victorian and 19th-century labels combined. Georgian and George III examples number around a hundred, so the early tray-top cupboards and commodes are a small part of the whole.

What unusual forms appear?

Cylindrical or drum-shaped mahogany cupboards recur, usually Victorian, and tambour roll-fronts show up on Georgian and Regency pieces. Rarer shapes surface once in a while: a corner pot cupboard, a kidney-shaped pair, a demi-lune pair, a bedside fitted with a steel safe, and chinoiserie lacquer cabinets on stand.
