How heavy is a standard mahogany one?

Mahogany is dense timber. A typical antique Edwardian bureau requires two capable adults to lift and move safely. Take the drawers out before you try to shift it. This reduces the overall weight and stops them sliding open on the stairs.

My study gets quite a lot of afternoon sun through a large window, will this fade the wood if I put the desk there?

Direct sunlight bleaches most antique timber over time. Mahogany fades to a pale flat brown, while oak takes on a dry grey appearance. The polished finish can also dry out and crack under constant ultraviolet exposure. Keeping the piece away from the window extends the life of the surface. If you have no alternative spot, try to keep the blinds drawn during the brightest part of the day. A good coat of clear microcrystalline wax helps protect the wood.

Can I replace the leather insert?

Yes, replacing a damaged skiver is standard maintenance. You can buy pre-tooled leather inserts cut to standard sizes from restoration suppliers. Scrape the old leather and glue away carefully to leave a clean wooden recess. Use a reversible adhesive to fix the new one in place.

The pull out supports seem a bit stiff when I try to open the desk up, is there a way to make them run smoother without damaging the wood?

Timber shrinks and swells with changes in household humidity. The lopers often jam in their channels during damp winter months. Pull them out as far as they will comfortably go and rub a plain candle along the sides and top edges. Paraffin wax provides dry lubrication that will not swell the wood fibres like oil. Work the supports back and forth a few times to distribute the wax. They usually loosen up quickly.
