Satsuma ware originated in Satsuma province, Japan, during the late 16th century, gaining international prominence during the Meiji period (18681912). Many 19th-century ceramic vases were subsequently adapted into electric table lamps during the 20th century to serve functional decorative roles in Western interiors.
