longcase clock, this one from the dynastic 'Black' family.
The trunk is flanked by a quarter pillar to each side and has a decorative panel under the door. The hood is adorned with centre raised decoration below wooden original and restored finials and paterae to each swan neck pediment. The hood door is flanked by a tapered pillar each side with brass capitals to top and bottom.
The 13 inch dial is a particular feature of the clock, the spandrels painted with scenes depicting the four seasons and the arch with an interior scene titled 'Fair Maid of Perth'. The clock also has both a subsidiary seconds and working date dial. Original stamped and pierced matching brass hands complete the stunning overall effect.
The movement is an eight day anchor escapement with a rack strike to sound the hours on a sonorous bell. The clock is powered by original matching weights and the movement has just been overhauled and fitted with new lines and as such benefits from my three year guarantee; this clock comes complete with a crank key.
James Black was a master watchmaker and in the 1881 census was recorded as working at 88 High Street Kirkaldy.
This clock really is a beautiful piece of furniture and being of demure proportions compared to some it is therefore easier to home.
