17th century
Description

Japanese Arita Kano design blue and white trumpet-shaped beaker vase Edo period circa 1680

The vase is painted in what is known as the Kano style which is specific to this design and period, circa 1670 1680.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Arita porcelain produced during the Edo period (16031867) in Japan is defined by underglaze cobalt blue decoration applied onto a white porcelain body. Early examples frequently feature landscape brushwork influenced by the Kano school of painting, created both for domestic use and export.

These vessels were crafted from crushed porcelain stone clay sourced near Arita, then painted by hand using cobalt oxide pigment on the unglazed body. A clear feldspathic glaze was applied over the decoration prior to firing at high temperatures in wood-fired climbing kilns.

Authentic 17th-century Arita porcelain displays underglaze blue tones ranging from vibrant sapphire to soft grey-blue, alongside minor firing irregularities, spur marks on the base, and slight variations in the hand-thrown porcelain wall thickness.

A trumpet-shaped beaker vase serves as a structural centrepiece on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table. Its blue and white palette complements dark timber furniture, architectural shelving, or balanced mantel displays.

Dust the surface using a dry, soft-bristled brush or clean lint-free cloth. Avoid submersion in water and refrain from using chemical detergent solutions, as moisture can seep into micro-crazing or existing hairline fractures.
