Standing on its original plinth base to an impressive height the case is in excellent condition with the trunk being flanked by twisted columns and boxwood inlay being present to both the trunk and the base. The trunk door has its original working lock and key.
Tapered pillars with brass capitals to the upper and base flank the opening door with a brass knob for access. The boxwood inlay continutes above the dial with a decorative scroll adorning the top of the hood with three raised plinths with ball and eagle original brass finials complimenting the design.
The dial is a particular feature of this clock. Signed 'Thomas Jenkins, Dowlais' the four corners depict typical country dwellings of the period with decorative foliage and houses to the main dial. The arch features a substantial cottage and it is likely all these buildings either were loctated in the village of Dowlais or were important to the maker/owner of the clock. The dial is in fantastic condition as is the fully working date wheel and there is also a seconds sub dial. Decorative brass hands finish off the warm look to this clock.
The movement is eight day and strikes each hour on a lovely bell; it has just been restored and as such benefits from my three year guarantee and this clock comes complete with original weights and a winding crank key.
In 1871 Thomas Jenkins was recorded as working in 56 High St, Merthyr Tydfil and further records show him at this address from 1865-1887.
