Guilloche is a decorative technique where a precise, intricate pattern is mechanically engraved into a metal substrate, such as silver, before being translucent enamel is applied over the top to let the pattern shine through.

These items typically combined cut crystal or pressed glass bases with sterling silver mounts and enamel lids, often featuring makers marks from major assay offices like Birmingham or London.

Authenticity is verified by examining the hallmarks for silver purity, assay office symbols, and date letters, alongside inspecting the enamel for hand-applied quality and age-related micro-crazing.

They make excellent decorative accents when placed on a dressing table, bathroom counter, or side table, adding a touch of period metallic texture and colour to modern schemes.

Silver components should be carefully polished with a specialist micro-fibre cloth avoiding contact with the enamel, while the glass base can be washed gently with mild soapy water and dried thoroughly.
