Georgian Sterling Silver Sugar Sifter Spoon

19th century
Description

A fine example of a Georgian Sterling Silver sugar sifter spoon. It is superb quality and has a pierced bowl with gilt interior and a stylised leaf pattern on the inside. The handle has matching engraved floral decoration and a small armorial crest.

It measures approximately 7" (18cm) long and the bowl is 2 1/4" (6cm) wide. It weighs approximately 55g.

It is hallmarked on the back of the top of the handle. Sadly the hallmark has worn over time but the Georgian head is visible as is the lion's head passant for London. I can make out the outline shape of the date letter and believe it to fall somewhere between circa 1800-1825.

It is in excellent condition for its age. There are no damages and it displays beautifully. There are some faint surface scratches and a few light marks but nothing detrimental. It has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Tracked UK delivery £6, rest of the world £20.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A sugar sifter spoon, widely produced during the Georgian era, is a specialized silver serving utensil featuring a perforated bowl designed to sprinkle powdered sugar or spices over desserts and fruit.

Traditional pieces were forged from sterling silver, featuring hand-pierced bowl perforations, chased or engraved handle decoration, and occasionally a gilded interior finish to protect the metal from acidity.

Authentic period pieces bear official assay office hallmarks, a monarchs head duty mark, a makers mark, and a date letter alongside evidence of hand-worked piercing and chasing.

This decorative utensil can be presented on a dining room sideboard tray, incorporated into open china cabinet displays, or used during formal dessert courses.

Wash by hand using mild soapy water, dry immediately with a soft cloth, and apply specialized silver polish sparingly to prevent oxidisation without smoothing fine engraving detail.
