This Georgian sterling silver serving spoon displays a classic silver colour with a polished metallic finish. It consists of a tapered oval bowl attached to an Old English pattern stem, terminating in an upturned handle tip engraved with initials. The piece carries clear hallmarks for Exeter from 1806, alongside the maker's mark for William Welch II, and shows faint surface scratches and light marks consistent with age. Measuring 22 cm long and 4.5 cm wide, the spoon is well-suited for display on a sideboard top in an English Country House interior. It functions as a traditional serving piece for everyday dining use or collection within a silver flatware display.

Georgian Exeter silver refers to sterling silver items produced in Exeter, Devon, during the reign of Kings George I through George IV between 1714 and 1830. Items crafted by Exeter silversmiths bear regional hallmark stamps, including the city assay mark depicting a castle with three towers.

Georgian flatware was hand-forged from sterling silver, an alloy composed of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper for structural stability. Pieces were formed using hammerwork and finished with hand-engraved monograms or crests on the stem terminal.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the hallmark sequence on the stem or bowl reverse. A complete Georgian Exeter mark set includes the maker mark, the sterling lion passant, the sovereign duty mark, a date letter, and the Exeter city mark of a three-turreted castle.

Georgian silver flatware can be displayed inside glass-fronted cabinets, positioned on dining sideboards in velvet-lined cases, or paired with contemporary porcelain to create a layered table setting.

Sterling silver should be wiped with a soft cotton cloth and cleaned using a specialist non-abrasive silver polish. Storing silver flatware in anti-tarnish cloth wraps prevents surface tarnish and minimises atmospheric oxidisation.
